I had the same issue on my MacBook Pro (not my partner's MacBook) - I think it was because I had the app 'Alarm Clock' installed on my MBP.

Talking with Apple support, the best they could figure is that it was trying to launch the welcome video and set up process for clean installs, which is not supposed to happen on upgrades.

Look in your Accounts preferences and in Login Items for your account. I found 'system events' in there and removed it. Messenger app for facebook mac.
